coastguards have issued a warning to people to respect the wintry seas.
It follows Whitby Gazette photographer snapping these youngsters dicing with death on Wednesday afternoon.

Joe Winspear and Alan Holmes, volunteer coastguard rescue officers, were patrolling the Whitby and Sandsend area on Wednesday.

Mr Winspear, who has been in the job for six months, said: “Do not go near the water’s edge.

“Locals tend not to go anywhere near, it’s daytrippers and holidaymakers who do not realise the potential dangers.

“When it’s that choppy and the waves are that high do no go too near, do not go past the slipway.”

And Mr Holmes, who has 10 years’ experience, said: “We have been out doing routine checks and patrols.

“I’ve seen a few near misses in my time, people shouldn’t take any risks.”
