THE first sighting of the infamous Beast of the Bay in more than a year was reported to the Whitby Gazette yesterday morning.
Retired teacher, Annabel Smith (62), of Front Street, Grosmont, was having a drink with friends in the White House pub on Friday night when she caught sight of the beast.
She watched it for a few minutes before going outside where another table of women confirmed they too had seen a mysterious big cat as it was getting dark at around 10pm.
She said: "It wasn't walking like a dog. It was walking like a cat. My friend who was with me, Veronica Nelson, saw it too and said it was definitely a big cat. It was far too big to be a domestic cat.
"It was just skulking, going from the sea towards the road."
The last reported sighting of the Beast of the Bay was in February last year in Eskdaleside.
