LOCAL youngsters took part in activities last week designed to improve their sporting techniques.
Children from West Cliff, East Whitby, Seton School in Staithes, Fylingdales and Egton were welcomed to the sports hall at Caedmon School to take part in a multi-skills festival.

Multi-skills involves encouraging children to move across the three dimensions of their bodies – high to low, right to left and forwards and backwards.

It also encourages children to develop basic techniques needed to perform sporting skills such as kicking, catching and throwing.

Twelve junior sports leaders from Caedmon School developed 10 small games for the young children to perform – some were simple relays and others involved more difficult tasks.

The names of the events included raging river, bean bag bonanza and mirror madness.

Pete Woolley, Whitby’s school sports co- ordinator, said: “The young leaders from year nine at Caedmon not only invented the games but also instructed and supervised each activity.

“The children thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon – many of the girls said their favourite activity was the dance routine and the boys enjoyed goals galore.

“Feedback from both parents and staff was extremely positive – they were most impressed with the way the young leaders engaged the younger children in each activity – giving clear instructions and tailoring skills to the youngsters varied abilities.”
