WHITBY pairing Ian Richardson and Barry Fitzpatrick reached the final of the doubles merit at Robin Hood's Bay – but could not quite match their rivals in an exciting clash.
The open competition was staged as a knockout event, which started on a warm but cloudy Sunday morning, with a total of 60 bowlers from across the district and as far as Barnsley in attendance.
All games were 21-up, with four on the card to start with.
Although black clouds loomed overhead, the rain held off during the first couple of rounds, but as play moved through into the quarter-finals there were some heavy showers, which altered the pace of the green considerably.
The results from the quarter-finals were: I Mott & J Stapleton (Dukes Park) 21 v A Kirby & T Purcell (Robin Hood's Bay) 18; Ian Richardson & Barry Fitzpatrick (Whitby) 21 v P Silcock & J Morris (Barnsley) 20; T Firth & A Benbrook (Dukes Park) 14 v A Deighton & C Bielby (Dukes Park) 21; E Emmerson & S Emmerson (Whitby) 16 v G Watson & M Jessop (Whitby) 21.
The first semi-final had Jessop and Watson narrowly beaten to 17, giving Deighton and Bielby a very deserving place in the final.
The other semi-final saw Richardson and Fitzpatrick take an early lead over Mott and Stapleton.
But the Dukes Park pair then knuckled down to some precise bowling to come back to 16, before Richardson and Fitzpatrick eventually secured their place alongside Deighton and Bielby in the final, 21- 16. As play commenced the clouds had disappeared and gave way to some pleasant sunshine, changing the scene yet again.
Deighton and Bielby took control of the game from the off and scoring four on the 6th end, went 14-6 in front. The Whitby duo then took the next four ends, taking them into double figures at 16-11.
However, despite a fantastic display of firing on several ends from Fitzpatrick, in an effort to stem their scoring there was no stopping the Dukes Park guys and they romped home comfortable winners, with the final score being 21-13.
The Robin Hood's Bay Bowling Club president thanked the ladies for providing the refreshments and everyone who helped on the day, before going on to congratulate the winners and present the trophies and prize money.
