WHITBY Community College students excelled to win a district trials athletics trial.
The college claimed 11 individual and team succcesses competing against Lady Lumley's Sports College, Ryedale, Norton, Malton and Fyling Hall.
All athletes who finished in the top three will now compete at the Whitby/Ryedale v Scarborough schools event at Huntingdon stadium today.
The college boys dominated the field events with Jack Howell winning the discus, Matt Dudman the shot putt, Darren Mills javelin and Joe Hugill triple jump.
Josh Weatherill (high jump) and Dwane Dryden (long jump) came second in their events while Megan Hill stepped in at the last moment to compete in the long jump as well as in her own triple jump event and qualified for the next round in both disciplines.
Beth Sanderson did likewise in the discus by winning the event, while Paige Beeforth was victorious in the high jump.
On the track, Grace Rodgers and Ryan Braithwaite were comfortable winners in their respective 800m races.
Dominic Hill stormed home to take the tape in the 100m, Robbie Seaton finished second in the 300m, Adrian Swaine – a relative newcomer to the athletics scene – knocked nearly a minute of his previous best to finish an excellent second in the 1,500m.
Jack Howell showed superb team spirit when the college 3,000m runner had to drop out at the last minute. Jack – only travelling on the bus as a supporter – ran his first ever 3,000m and qualified for the next round in second place.
Eve Locker ran fluently in the gruelling 300m sprint to take first place. Cassie Fitzharris and Charlotte Allan, running in their first athletics event for the college, competed solidly to finish third in the 1,500m and second in the 3,000m respectively.
Grace Rodgers scooped up vital team points by running in the 100m and Eve Locker filled the 200m slot vacated by an injured athlete. The boys' relay team of Robbie Seaton, Matt Dudman, Liam Wilson and Dominic Hill ran well, with excellent changeover technique, to win the relay race.
