Airy Hill claim Rotary Cup in 22nd big event

THE 22nd annual Octoberfest organised by the Rotary Club of Whitby saw a large and enthusiastic crowd of parents and friends cheer on the 136 competitors, despite the rain, in eight age group-related fun runs, from eight local primary schools.
Winners of the Rotary Cup for turning out the most runners on the day was awarded to Airy Hill with 38 points; second East Whitby 24 points; equal third Ruswarp and Stakesby 21 points.

The year six boys, following an outstanding run by Shane Hicks who dominated the opposition to win by one minute and 17 seconds from Harry Liddle of Lythe with Jed Draper Airy Hill in third, went to Airy Hill who swept up the team title ahead of Ruswarp with Stakesby third.

In the year six girls event, Laura Hudson of Ruswarp held off Paige Stewart of Airy Hill to claim the individual title and although Lucy Hammond of Ruswarp claimed third spot, Airy Hill took the team race, second Ruswarp and third Lythe School.

The fifth year boys’ team shield was won by Ruswarp School ahead of Stakesby, with runners up East Whitby.

While the year five girls’ trophy Stakesby claimed top spot ahead of Ruswarp and Airy Hill.

Each runner who completed their course was presented with commemorative medal to mark their endeavours by the Whitby Town Mayor, Coun Steve Smith.

Event organiser Harry Collett thanked the members of the Rotary Club of Whitby, the members of Inner Wheel and the St John Ambulance Brigade for their help and assistance in the staging of the runs.
