GREEN-FINGERED villagers are opening their gardens to the public in aid of local charities this Sunday.
Residents throughout Fyling-thorpe and Robin Hood’s Bay are taking part in an Open Gardens event where both visitors and locals alike will get the chance to view the variety of different gardens on offer.
Over 20 gardens will be open to look around, and all proceeds will be donated to Whitby and Ryedale Alzheimer’s Society and other local charities.
This year’s event will be the third annual Open Gardens to take place in ’Bay and ’Thorpe after two previous successful years, ranging from small cottage gardens to those on a big scale, one even including a field full of sculpted deer.
There will be new gardens featured this year as well as ones that have featured over the past two years and the event promises to be an exciting opportunity to share tips with fellow gardeners as well as providing inspiration for future gardening ideas.
Events organiser Sue Tucker, said: “We started the Open Gardens because awareness of the disease is not very high, and until dementia happens within the family, it’s hard for people to understand what it’s like.
“My mother suffered from dementia so I felt that this is a worthwhile cause.
“We’re trying to raise awareness so that others with family members or friends suffering from the disease feel that there are people around to talk to.
“This is the third year for the Open Gardens now, and everybody has been so supportive.
“We were overwhelmed at the attendance the first year, and everybody who took part was insistent we do it again. And now we are here for a third year.”
As well as showcasing the passion and talents of Robin Hood’s Bay and Fylingthorpe’s gardeners, the event will also include refreshments, brick a brac and plant stalls, folk singers, and a tombola outside Station Road Stores in Robin Hood’s Bay.
Sue added there will also be leaflets available, promoting the awareness of dementure, as well as professionals around to talk to.
Tickets for the event are available at Station Road Stores.
Entry costs £4, with admission for children under 16 free (if accompanied by an adult).
Carers are granted a ‘two for the price of one’ entry if they are accompanying the individual they care for.
Gardens are open from 11am until 5pm on Sunday 8 June.
Visitors will be given a list of gardens when they buy their tickets.
