SNEATON and Hawsker show organisers are determined to carry on with the historic event despite two successive years of bad weather.
But at least this year the show, now held on Sneaton Castle field, was able to go ahead – last year the rain was so bad, causing the showfield to be in a dangerous condition, organisers had to cancel it.

Show chairman Gavin Stainthorpe said: “We had to cancel completely last year because the field was in a terrible state but at least we were able to go ahead this time although we’ll be running at a loss again.

“It’s the sixth year we’ve held it at Sneaton and it’s a nice setting with the castle in the background and it’s handy for Whitby people to get to.

“We’ve been going for well over 100 years so we’re not going to give up and we’ll try our best again next year.”

Among particular attractions this year, especially with the children who visited the show, were baby llamas and 24 Dexter cattle which have also appeared at two of the country’s top shows, the Royal and Great Yorkshire.

Among the events which had to be called off by the organisers due to the downpour were outdoor demonstrations by the fire brigade, Pesky Huskies and the grand parade.

But despite restrictions on the movement of livestock due to the disease bluetongue, most categories in the show were well supported, particularly in the sheep and cattle classes with only one cow being pulled out.
