A TALENTED Hawsker youngster is making her way in music by scooping a prestigious award.
Sarah Robson (16), of Prospect Field, who is studying for her A-Levels at Whitby Community College, has won the Whitby Young Musician of the Year award for her efforts and accomplishments within the music scene in the region.
The award, which recognises the talent of musical youngsters, was presented to Sarah for her outstanding clarinet-playing at the latest Young Musicians' Trust concert held at Eskdale School.
The receiver of the award is decided by a discussion held between local music teachers in conjunction with Whitby Community College and the music centre, in which the names of potential candidates are put forward.
Sarah, who has been playing the clarinet for nine years, said: "I was really surprised to win the award – I didn't even know that I had been chosen until they said it was me that had won.
"I'm grateful to John Barber for encouraging me to start playing music, and for giving me the experience to teach others.
"I'm also thankful to Bob Butterfield for his teaching and guidance over the past two years."
The talented youngster, who also plays the flute, is a member of woodwind band Zephyr, run by local music teacher Mr Butterfield.
Sarah, who is now preparing for her Clarinet Grade 7 Examination at the end of the year, added that she does not come from a musical background and that she hopes to study music further at Leeds College of Music next year. She also teaches recorder voluntarily to schoolchildren at Stakesby Primary School.
Mr Barber, a member of the Young Musicians Trust as well as headteacher at Hawsker Primary School, said: "It was agreed by the Young Musicians Trust that Sarah would be a worthy recipient for the award due to her commitment to the Saturday morning centre, and with her general involvement in other musical things around the area such as the Eskdale Festival, Zephyr and teaching recorder voluntarily to youngsters at Stakesby school."
