AN ex-Fyling Hall pupil who is now serving in the Royal Navy is organising a major rugby-themed fund-raiser which aims to raise thousands of pounds for the forces charity Help For Heroes.
Jonathon Hardy (27) spent his formative years at Fyling Hall and said the school taught him much of what makes him the man he is today, including his love of rugby.

In 2005 he earned a Queen’s Commision into the Royal Navy and now works as an air traffic controller at RNAS Culdrose.

He has organised the 2009 Fyling Hall Charity rugby, dinner and auction – the first event of its kind – on Saturday 26 September for Help For Heroes.

The charity is instrumental in supporting those military personnel, who are injured serving in Iraq and Afghnistan and their families.

Kicking off proceedings will be a pub quiz in the George Hotel on Friday 25 September and the following day there will be an old boys’ house rugby match, blues v reds, kicking off at noon on Fyling Hall sportsfield.

This will be preceded by a pre-match kicking competition at 11am.

Places for the match are being auctioned off and the email process for this finishes on Monday 15 June.

Then from 7pm on Saturday 25 September, there will be a black tie dinner held in a marquee at the back of Fyling Hall. The dinner will be followed by after dinner speaker John Bentley who will keep everyone entertained.

John represented England and Great Britain in both codes of rugby, union and league.

There will be two charity auctions on the night with a host of prizes including dinner for four at the Michelin starred Star Inn at Harome, near Helmsley, a signed England rugby shirt by Jamie Noon and two tickets to the autumn internationals at Twickenham and a Manchester United pennant signed by the whole team.

Music from live band Looking For H completes the evening’s line-up.

Mr Hardy said: “Many people I knew from school and obviously many friends from my naval career have served and are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“I myself went to Iraq in 2005 as part of my training and although only for a short time, it gave me an appreciation of what my colleagues from all three services are enduring in these hostile places.

“Fortunately, no-one I know personally has needed the help provided by Help for Heroes, but there is a great comfort in the knowledge the work they do and the support they provide is essential to the recovery of those in need.

“I invite all to attend the event and support Help for Heroes.

“I look forward to a fantastic event and I intend to enjoy every moment of it while raising as much money for the charity as possible.”

It is hoped the event will attract former pupils, students, their families and celebrities from far and wide.

Major Phil Packer who works tirelessly raising money for Help for Heroes, after himself being injured in Iraq, will be attending the dinner.

Tickets for the dinner are priced £50 per person. Email Jonathon at jof_1999@hotmail.com to find out payment details.
