Villages in the Whitby area with a population of 5,000 and under are being offered the opportunity to be judged the best in the whole of the UK with the launch of the UK Calor Village of the Year competition.
The UK competition adds an additional tier to the existing competitions and, for the first time ever, the winning villages from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will compete for the honour of being crowned the United Kingdom Calor Villag
e of the Year.

Competition manager, Suzanne Weir said: “Calor Village of the Year is a very progressive competition and we’re constantly looking for ways of raising the bar for villages as well as bringing the competition to the notice of more communities.

“We have recognised that, while village communities across the UK face very different issues, they tackle their problems with the same community spirit.

“This competition is about celebrating what they have in common and what brings them together in the face of adversity.”

There are 12,000 village communities in England eligible to become involved in the 2009 UK competition but, in order to be in with a chance of winning, villages must first participate in the national competition. Entry to the Calor Village of the Year for England competition is through a network of county events, all of which are invited to nominate a village to represent that county in the national competition.

Details of the local competitions in England can be found on the competition website at www.calorvillageoftheyear.org
