Where are all the big name stores?

While I am pleased to hear we may get a Homebase, why are we without any other well known stores?
I recently went to Redcar, the first time since a child, and I couldn’t believe the stores they have – Argos, New Look, Morrisons, WHSmith and a small Marks & Spencer.
I am sure Redcar is the same size as Whitby.
They used to say we were too small a town for bigger shops.
As it is, a person with transport shops at Teesside, Scarborough or Redcar.
We need more in Whitby to cater for the residents who don’t have transport.
