Phone boxes are a lifeline

I was horrified to learn that some of our phone boxes may be being removed.
I am particularly distressed about the possible removal of the Great Fryupdale box (near the village hall and outdoor centre).

I have also noticed a poster on the Danby phone box saying this box was under review.

I urge anyone who is as horrif
ied as I am to object straight away.

My main issues are that BT cites the use of mobiles for a declining use of phone boxes.

This is probably the case but BT needs to realise that mobile reception in most parts of the North York Moors is nigh on non-existent.

Danby itself can only receive a patchy Orange signal and Great Fryupdale receives no mobile signal.

These phone boxes are a vital lifeline to communities and visitors.

Danby has already lost its shop and post office – are we to see another village amenity disappear?

Great Fryupdale phone box is even more vital to a remote, scattered community.

Fryupdale gets lots of walkers – if there is an emergency, mobiles will be useless.

Also, being right outside the outdoor centre the phone gets used by the children when staying there to phone home.

Let’s leave children away from home without a means of contacting their parents – heartless.

Come on everyone, we are seeing our rural services being taken away one by one.

Let’s not sit back and quietly watch another disappear.

Claire Woolf, Danby
