Lew admiration

I was saddened to read of the death of Lew Borrett MBE, one of the few ex-servicemen in this area I respected and admired.
I considered him an honourable man with no front or pretension.
While preparing for the Poppy Appeal a few years ago I suggested he was worthy of more than just an MBE to which he modestly replied that it was the highest award that a captain in the army could attain at that time.
This is typical of the awards system when failed politicians and pop stars are knighted, MBEs/BEMs are given to obsequious individual and real heroes barely acknowledged.
As a recent convert to agnosticism it would have been hypocritical of me to attend his funeral service in church last Thursday but I was quietly thinking of this fine man at that time.
