Published Date: 27 June 2008
Congratulations to Mrs Cole (Whitby Gazette 10 June), letter headed 'It's not fair on our fishermen', and may I, through your column, ask Mrs Cole if I may photocopy her letter and post it to where I posted mine, the Minister of Fisheries.
Through the years I have realised it is all well and good, and indeed beneficial, to write and express opinions and ideas locally, but on big issues, far better to write to the government minister concerned.

I also know that, less than five letters regarding one complaint, then I must have permission to send copy of letters.

Mrs Cole’s full postal address is not published and rightly so.

I also know the editor is not allowed to pass this or any other address to enquiries.

Hence my question to Mrs Cole and I ask for her full postal address and telephone number.

Now to the rugby club.

Many readers seem to think I have no interest in the plight of the rugby club.

Well I have very much interest in all that goes on in Whitby that shouldn’t, also all that does go on that should.

My letter and form and photocopies of many other letters printed in Letters to the Editor regarding this club was posted off to the local government ombudsman complaint commission.

More than five letters, hence I did not need permission.

Through the years, since 1983, the late Tom Roe and I have campaigned to opt Whitby out of Scarborough to no avail.

Further back in the 1950s, I can’t remember the exact date, it was long before Whitby was joined with Scarborough and Filey but we did have the same MP, it was the general election.

A charabanc (bus trip) travelled from Whitby to Scarborough all with red rosettes and red hats.

When all off the bus a lady with a large blue rosette asked ‘where on earth have you come from?’

The answer induced laughter all over Whitby, particularly in town tailors, then the 50 shilling tailors, then Burberrys, now The Shambles.

Her answer – We’ve marched fray Jarra.

Scarborough and Whitby Conservative MP Alec Spearman was re-elected once again.

How sad we all were.

Still it was good to have a little laughter to drown our sorrows.

It still is, that’s why I always add a little joy to my letters.

The one speech A Spearman made that I agree with was, Spearman said trying to suppress inflation by controlling prices was madness.

The choice was between two evils – either people worked harder or there will be a drop in the standard of living.

This was said 60 years ago when he returned from a trip to the USA.

He also said people in Britain did not work as hard as in America.

I agree. Not of the people who can work and do, but the people who can work and don’t.

I have a strange memory.

I remember A Spearman MP, I remember King George V and Queen Mary’s Silver Jubilee 1935, yet can’t remember what I had for my breakfast, what I went into the kitchen for or why the Fairy Liquid is in the fridge and the milk in the cupboard underneath the sink?
