I WAS not able to see the arrival of the William Riley but just reading about it brought a throat-clenching feeling of intense admiration for the team of heroic 'drinking buddies' and all concerned in the event.
While there are folk like that about there is surely hope for mankind.

What a splendid example they have set – and what a challenge to that other class of drinkers whose sole aim is to get mindlessly drunk and cause trouble with such stupid acts as jumping into the harbour, vandalising property and causing harm to others.

Could any of them do anything even remotely courageous and altruistic as the wonderful achievement of the Ales Angels?

I doubt it – they haven’t the guts.
