Regarding the letter regarding the Grand Turk in the Whitby Gazette of 30 May.
I would like to echo the sentiments of John Palethorpe – we failed to build the Endeavour when Australia went ahead and succeeded.

There have been a number of attempts to build a tall ship for Whitby but here is one ready made.

Okay, it’s a rep
lica but so would any other ship built here be and this beautiful frigate is sitting waiting for some forward-looking council member to say – come on, we’ll buy it.

It is very seaworthy and could sail up and down locally or whatever, as an ambassador for the north east coast.

Having been a guide/crew member/shipkeeper on Endeavour since she came to Whitby (volunteer of course), it has been very easy to transfer my allegiance to the Grand Turk since Endeavour sailed away to Oz.

The Turk really is like a magnet to all who know her and children think she is fantastic.

They help to run out the guns, swing in a hammock, sword fight with pirates and squirm when introduced to the rats in a cage which are being fattened up for a stew.

The ship is available for all social functions, including weddings – she joins in the life of Whitby and is used for charity events.

She fits in beautifully, in fact, majestically swaying in the tide.

Come on, isn’t it really time to keep this ‘treasure’?

Dorothy Morrison, ex-sea ranger SRSS Scarboro, ex-sea ranger lieutenant SRS Scarboro, ex-Endeavour guide/shipkeeper now grand Turk volunteer guide/crew/Jacqueline of all trades, Pasture Lane, Seamer, Scarborough
